Apple's leadership in 2011

The announcement this week that Steve Jobs was resigning as Apple CEO formalised what was already in place. Jobs took medical leave from Apple in January 2011, and Tim Cook was acting-CEO since then. The decision by Jobs to resign as CEO and move to Chairman of the board simply crystallised an existing situation in the leadership at Apple.
We also feel that comments about the post-Jobs era are somewhat unfair. Jobs is still at Apple, and continues to be an Apple employee (as mentioned in his CEO resignation letter). Some of the coverage appears to be written in the style of obituaries, which does no justice to Jobs or to journalism.
However some of the smartest commentary came from John Gruber. Gruber wrote about the succession plan at Apple back in July, and both that article and this week’s comments on Jobs’ resignation are worth a read. They are some of the clearest comments we have read this week.
