iPhone update plugs many gaps
The new iPhone operating system, based on Mac OS X, was previewed this week at a special Apple event held in Cupertino. Version 3.0 promises many new features, 100 according to Apple. Some of these are very welcome and fill gaps which we had hoped would be filled soon.
The first and most obvious is copy and paste. The iPhone did have some glaring omissions, none more so than when you wished to copy a piece of text from an email into another application, or when you want to copy a contact phone number into a note or email. Apple seem to have a neat system in 3.0, and in many ways this is part of the joy of their planning- wait until they have it absolutely right.
Spotlight for iPhone is another nice addition. There have been some third party attempts at search, such as Google's iPhone app, but Spotlight for iPhone will be universal, and very useful as we add more and more data to the phone.
Apple have posted the presentation video online at www.apple.com. We will also be posting some stats and facts from the event.
