- Here is a run-down of the announcements from the iPhone 3.0 event this week:
- iPhone now on sale in 80 countries, with China being probably the biggest gap right now.
- 13.7m iPhones sold in 2008
- 17m iPhones sold to end of 2008
- iPhone and iPod touch run iPhone OS- so 30m devices now run this OS
- 800,000 downloads of iPhone SDK
- 50,000 iPhone developers now signed up to Apple Developer program
- 60% did not develop for Apple before this
- Gameloft have sold 2m paid downloads through App Store
- 96% of apps submitted are approved by Apple
- 98% of apps are approved in 7 days or less
- 800 million downloads from the App Store, in 8 months
- 25,000 apps now available
- 1000 new APIs for developers in 3.0
- 70% of revenue goes to developer
- 30% to Apple- Apple pay all fees (e.g. credit card fees)
- subscriptions to be available on App Store- e.g. magazine/newspaper content, eBooks, or game levels. This will be called "In App Purchase"
- no In Apps Purchases inside free apps
- Peer to Peer in 3.0- you can play games against people in your area- over Bluetooth- no pairing required
- Bonjour technology underpins this- automatic discovery
- accessory manufacturers can now build an app to control their hardware
- medical devices manufacturers can build apps to record readings, blood pressure, glucose etc
- Google Maps will be available to new apps, and can be embedded in the app
- Apple don't allow apps to run in background as they drain battery by 80%
- push notifications are to be allowed in apps in 3.0
- notifications can be badges, noises or text alerts
- all apps must use Apple notification service- not use their own system
- emails can be sent from inside an app
- data detectors come to 3.0
- iPod music library available inside other apps
- contacts can be sent to other people using vcf attachments
- you can send more than one photo at a time in 3.0
- copy and paste in 3.0- shake the iPhone to undo/redo
- landscape in now available in all key apps: Mail, Notes, SMS
- MMS available on iPHone 3G with 3.0
- contacts in vcf, photos, audio files, Locations can all be sent as MMS
- Apple have added Voice memos app to 3.0- accepts external microphone if required
- memos can be trimmed, then emailed or sent over MMS
- CalDav added to iPhone calendar app plus subscription calendars
- news headlines and detail added to Stocks app
- search added to all key apps: Mail allows search on your server as well as on phone
- iPod, calendar, notes also allow search
- search is called Spotlight- like in OS X, and is to left of home screen on iPhone
- shake to shuffle on iPhone- similar to shuffle
- auto login to WiFi networks
- stereo Bluetooth available
- autofill and anti-phishing now in Safari on iPhone
- parental controls included
- more languages included
- you can login to a YouTube account
- AppStore in 62 countries, and this is to increase to 77 countries
- 3.0 free to all iPhone 3G and iPhone customers- some features such as MMS will not work on original iPhone
- 3.0 will be $9.95 for iPhone touch customers
