Apple Expo Paris: will there be a keynote

No announcement on Jobs' and other executives' presence...
The Apple Expo in Paris is to be held in just under one month's time, starting on September 25th 2007. However, there is still no word on whether there will be a keynote address by Apple. The last keynote by Apple CEO Steve Jobs was in 2003, with Phil Shiller stepping in in 2004 when Jobs was recovering from a cancer operation.
In 2005 there had been an expectation that Jobs would return to present his keynote to open the conference, but this did not materialise. Instead Apple held high level meetings, with Jobs and fellow executives attending the show, but no formal presentation. On this occasion, Apple made an announcement two weeks in advance that there would be no keynote address.
In August 2006 Read Expositions, the expo organisers, confirmed that Jobs would not keynote the Expo. This happened in the middle of August, with the Expo beginning on 12th September.
Given that this year the date of a keynote would be Tuesday 25th September, we can probably expect some indication by the end of August as to whether whether Jobs intends to open the event. However, in recent days there have been rumours that the iPod lineup may be refreshed at the start of September, and if true, this may possibly undermine the prospect of a Paris event, with the company choosing to bypass Paris.
It would be a real shame if Apple choose to announce new products so close to the Paris show, instead of using the platform of the Expo and its keynote address, which had been customary until 2004. With the demise in recent years of the US east coast Expo and the Tokyo Expo, the San Francisco Macworld and Paris Apple Expo are the last two remaining regular showcases. The new trend has been where Apple have chosen to announce new products in stand alone events, such as the recent iMac and software updates, held at a special press event at Cupertino.
From a European perspective, let's hope Apple stick wth their European event, and support it with a keynote address. An Expo without a keynote certainly lacks much of its lustre, and stands simply as a trade show rather than an event for media attention. If this is the case again this year, we predict the slow decline of the European Expo without a strong presence from Apple, and most critically representation from their senior executive team.
Mac Information are planning to attend this year's show and we plan to bring you regular stories between the 25th and 29th September.
UPDATE: We received a reply today from Reed Exhibitions, organiser of the Expo, after we enquired if they had any news about a keynote on Sept 25th. They said that they could not tell at this stage if there would be a keynote address, but that all press would receive an email if one is announced. We are encouraged by the fact that they have not ruled one out, and Apple may still be considering it as an option.
