PriceWatch: Amazon vs Apple for new Macs

A closer look at Amazon.co.uk's pricing
As we reported yesterday, Amazon are offering good prices on some new Macs. With the reintroduction of shipments to Ireland it gives another option to Irish buyers.
We have taken a look a some models to see how Amazon compare to pricing on the Irish Apple Store. Amazon provide an optional currency conversion tool, where you can purchase in euros. The advantage is knowing the exact price when purchasing; the disadvantage is that Amazon set the conversion rate, and we suspect this is less generous than some credit card companies. During our tests, the conversion figure at Amazon was GBP£1 to €1.158. The ECB rate on the day was £1 to €1.12, so you can see that Amazon are taking a small cut on this transaction.
Please note also that Amazon charge VAT at the Irish rate of 21.50% for shipments to Ireland, so companies should be able to claim this back. This is why some Amazon.co.uk prices are more expensive that Apple UK [noted below].
