Apple launches Mac Pro desktop...

Launch completes Intel transition...

Apple have completed their transition from Power PC to Intel processors with the introduction of the new Mac Pro desktop. This model replaces the Power PC based Power Mac G5, and is aimed at design and video professionals looking for the fastest Mac available.
The new tower is highly configurable, with PCI cards, hard drives and media drives. The standard suggested model comes with two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" processors. The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 with 256 MB memory. The standard media drive is a 16x SuperDrive.
Here is a list of the items which comes as standard in all Mac Pros:
  • two Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” microprocessors
    • eight fully buffered DIMM slots
    • one double-wide PCI Express graphics slot
    • three full-length PCI Express expansion slots
    • four hard drive bays, two optical drive bays
    • five USB 2.0 ports
    • two FireWire 400 ports
    • two FireWire 800 ports
    • dual Gigabit Ethernet ports
    • optical digital audio input and output
    • analog stereo line-input and line-output
    • headphone minijack.
One welcome feature is the addition of a FireWire 800 port to the front of the mac Pro, something absent on the Power Mac G5. The processors can be upgraded to 3GHz using the online Apple store "configure now" section.
Prices and configuration details are available from the Irish Apple Store.
